Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I choose the right color for my cabinets?
Choosing a color can be daunting, but it starts with understanding your style and the overall look you want to achieve. Consider factors like your kitchen’s size, lighting, and existing décor. Samples can help visualize how colors will appear in your space. Examine samples during different times of day, and think about warmth/coolness, textures, when you spend most of your time there, and think about what works NOW, not about future plans.
We recommend one of the following colors: Accessible Beige, Alabaster, Anonymous, Antique White, Argos, Austere Gray, Creamy, Cyberspace, Dorian Gray, Eventide, Extra White, Gale Force, Gibraltar, Green Sprout, Interesting Aqua, Mindful Gray, Naval, Olive Grove, Pewter Green, Poolhouse, Pure White, Pussywillow, Repose Gray, Retreat, Silver Strand, Smoky Blue, Software, Tricorn Black, Urbane Bronze,
2. What door styles do you recommend?
Popular options include shaker, flat-panel, and some still prefer raised-panel doors. Think about how you use the space: is ease of cleaning important, or the look when the kitchen is totally clean? I can guide you through the options that best match your vision and complement your kitchen’s design.
3. How does the refinishing process work?
The refinishing process typically involves measuring and ordering new doors, then cleaning, sanding, and applying a primer on the existing cabinets, followed by a high-quality finish. I ensure each step is done meticulously to achieve a durable and beautiful result. The entire process usually takes less than 5 days.
4. What types of finishes do you offer?
Oil-based Conversion Varnish. While water-based has come a long way in recent years, oil-based is superior. Water-based products dry quickly, have low odor, and are easier to clean up, while oil-based finishes provide a richer appearance and exceptional durability.
5. Can I still use my kitchen during the refinishing process?
There are usually 2 full days and a partial third where your kitchen will largely be unusable. After those initial heavier days, it opens back up to your use. But we advise being gentle for the first few days, as the finish will still be curing.
6. What’s the difference between refinishing and repainting cabinets?
Refinishing involves cleaning, sanding, and applying a new finish, preserving the cabinet’s integrity and design, as well as new cabinet doors. The coating we apply is designed for years of heavier use. Repainting usually means purchasing the nicer paints at chain stores. Generally, this work is done by people with a painting background and not a background in cabinet shop finish-rooms. The products do not last as long, but initially do look great.
7. How long will the refinished cabinets last?
With proper care, refinished cabinets can last 10-15 years or longer. I use high-quality products and techniques to ensure durability, and I’ll provide guidance on maintenance to extend their lifespan.
8. Are there any warranties on your refinishing work?
Yes, I stand by my work and offer a warranty on my refinishing services. This warranty covers defects in craftsmanship, giving you peace of mind as you enjoy your newly transformed kitchen. If there is a defect, it will usually manifest in a matter of weeks. As such, I warranty for that first, most crucial year.
9. Can you help with additional upgrades like hardware or crown molding?
Absolutely! I can assist you in selecting and installing new hardware and crown molding to enhance your cabinets and overall kitchen design. These small details can make a big impact!
10. How do I prepare for the refinishing project?
To prepare for your project, clear out your cabinets and remove any items from countertops. I recommend designating a space for essential items that you’ll need access to during the process. I’ll guide you through any other preparations needed.
